When I bought a one-way ticket out of LAX to travel the world, the pressure was finally off to get a boyfriend. Finally. Even returning to Los Angeles, my perspective on dating in my mid twenties has altered entirely. James Swanwick, former ESPN anchor, celebrity host, and founder of Date Top Ten Men, invited me to discuss why women should be traveling while they’re single, what traveling has done for my personal life, and to give his thoughts on how traveling makes women more attractive.
Here’s some things he caught me saying during our interview:
“When I was in LA there was kind of a pressure to find the man you marry. Since I wasn’t planning on staying in Australia, the pressure was off. You know the am I going to get married, make babies — – introduce him to my parents? I didn’t go into it [dating in Australia, or now as a traveler] with that perspective. When you’re overseas, or casually dating… you’re actually genuinely getting to know the person with no pressure – – not trying to force a relationship onto it. And men are turned off by forceful relationships. They want to get to know you before they commit to you. You can’t treat a guy like he’s your boyfriend or your husband, when he’s not. He’s still getting to know you three months in.”
“I do feel like dating men from LA is a little different than dating men from other places. Actually leaving Los Angeles made me more confident with me. I felt like I didn’t have to be a Stepford wife, and I could just be myself. You have nothing to lose when you’re going overseas.”
“I was a woman that wasn’t used to being vulnerable. When I moved to Australia, I was for the first time a damsel in distress… I put my walls down, and I met an Aussie guy… I became more willing to let someone compliment me.”
“When you travel – – because you’re different – – it makes you realize there’s so many more fish in the sea. When you have that comfort level of knowing that you don’t have to hurry up and find someone in LA – or Seattle or wherever you are – – [you realize that] there’s more people out there. You forget that sometimes (if you’re in your bubble or in a society where you’re running through routines) that there’s a bigger world out there. Traveling hits your heart and you really know that there’s so much more out there… and by default, there’s so many more men out there.”
“Not only are there more men outside of your own city. You’re also more attractive when you get home. Men like women who are independent. They like that you’re not just sitting at home waiting for a white picket fence. It’s someone that’s complimenting you. You can take each other places.”
“Part of the reason why you feel more attractive (when you’re traveling), is because you are more attractive – – because you’re different.”
