A Guide to Visiting Caye Caulker, Belize

Updated: 04/01/2018 | April 1st, 2018 Set off the coast of Belize, Caye Caulker is paradise. It’s small, it’s beautiful, it’s youthful. Everyone here is friendly, and no one moves quickly. There are no cars, only little golf carts, and the island’s motto is “Go Slow.” The tempo will have you running on island time before you know it. Years ago, the island was a lot bigger, but after Hurricane Hattie ripped through here in 1961 villagers dredged a waterway by hand after the hurricane opened a passage a few inches deep so dugout canoes could go past. Over time, the increased flow of tidal water enlarged the opening through erosion to its present 20 feet deep. This creates a rapid channel through the north and south part of the island that makes for great swimming and snorkeling as fish move through the water. There’s not much to do on the island itself. This is a place where you 100% want to come here just to relax. There’s plenty of beaches, guesthouses, and even a club ...

How to Tour a Coffee Plantation in Panama

Updated: 02/02/2020 | February 2nd, 2020 I have a confession: I’m not a coffee drinker. I think the last time I had coffee was about five years ago. The only way I like coffee is when you add in all those other flavors, milk, and whipped cream because it masks the coffee taste and makes it drinkable to me. I simply hate the bitterness of coffee. There’s only been one time I enjoyed a cup of java. It was back in 2003 when I was in Costa Rica, exploring the cloud forest in Monteverde. The organic, shade-grown coffee I had there was like drinking chocolate, and I couldn’t get enough of it. I bought a bag to take home and drank it every day. So when my friends wanted to tour a coffee plantation in Boquete, Panama, I was less than enthused. “Can’t we go hiking instead?” I asked. “No, we’re doing the coffee tour,” they replied. We had hiked the previous day and they wanted to do something different. I grumbled, but reluctantly I agr...

Certified! PADI Open Water Diver

Over the last week, I have been swimming my way to my certification that allows me to dive anywhere in the world. The PADI Open Water Diver. Once you go you are hooked It can be said about many things in life, but it is defiantly true about diving. The world looks amazing 60ft below the surface. I have always loved to snorkel, its great you get to see a few little fishes, but it just doesn’t even compare with diving. The colors Every color of the rainbow, and maybe more, can be found floating on or around the reef. Most people think of the fish as the source of interest underwater, but the coral can be absolutely amazing too. Flying underwater Its one of the coolest feelings, just being suspended, weightless, and free. With practice you can keep yourself still or move exactly where you want to be with just your breathing, cruising just above the coral. Diving the CJ site: North Shore – Utila, Honduras I took my course on the island of Utila, 20 miles off the shor...
